About My Work
Natural forms and textures intrigue me and I often find inspiration in things I pick up off the ground. Some of the sculptures in my current body of work are explorations of flowers, buds, seeds, and thorns.
Very few of the works I create are done without some plan in mind. Photographs of places I have visited are often brought into play on the walls of my studio. Usually I will explore my ideas with several sketches before starting a complete work.
My ceramics are made on the potter’s wheel; “thrown” cylinders that are opened or closed, altered, and carved. Metal sculptures are cut plate or welded pipe, although I have done work in bronze and some sculpture in wood. The nest paintings and drawings were painted or drawn on paper, then cut-out and assembled in layers.
At a difficult time in my life drawing birds’ nests gave me quiet moments of peace. Over time they have become nested flower forms, brambles and arbors, and carved vessels with bird imagery. It is my hope that my work will bring peace to others.
